Lisa Black

Lisa Black Award winning artist and photographerAs a child, Life Magazine came to our house weekly. Turning the pages of each issue was an adventure. I loved looking at the pictures--savoring them for as long as I wished. As an adult, due to my husband's association with Life and Smithsonian Magazines, I was fortunate enough to meet some of the photographers I admired so much--Alfred Eisenstaedt, Cornell Capa, Carl and Shelly Mydans, and John Dominis. It was truly a thrill for me to meet them.

I've spent my life looking at and admiring all kinds of pictures--photographs and paintings alike. As for me, looking through the lens of a camera and zeroing in on something beautiful or unusual is a downright exciting thing! The joy of shooting pictures has awarded me the pleasure of receiving 153 prizes in photography and several other media.

My photographs do not resemble those I loved in Life but I do enjoy taking pictures of whatever catches my eye, being able to freeze the images in still time--where they can be seen and enjoyed over and over again.

Before starting photography, I received a degree from the University of Michigan in Art History and French, and a diploma from the Sorbonne in French Civilization. Picasso inspired me to paint. Seeing his exhibition in Paris--the variety, vitality, and strength of his work--I had little choice but to begin. Now, an artist myself, I've experimented with many media. I love the bold colors of acrylics, the magic of watercolors, the joy of monotypes--the endless possibilities of washes in black and grey.  My purpose is to explore and experiment with a variety of media for the sheer joy of producing art that is colorful, strong, expressionistic and individualistic. There have been many influences in my work--Cezanne, VanGogh, Picasso, Matisse, the Abstract Expressionists and to some extent, Andy Warhol.

I've studied at the Art Students' League in New York, The Rowayton Arts Center, The New York Institute of Photography, The Center for Contemporary Printmaking in Norwalk, Connecticut and with other encouraging teachers throughout my career. My name is listed in Who's Who in American Art, International Who's Who of Professional and Business Women, Marquis Who's Who in the World, Marquis Who's Who in America, 2000 Notable American Women, Tenth Commemorative Edition, The International Who's Who in Poetry. Member National League of American Pen Women.
